Why I use 7.5x magnification loupes (and why it’s good news for you)
By Dr Tom Shumack, BSci (Syd. Uni), BDent (Hons) (Syd. Uni)
There’s no room for mistakes in my line of work. As a dentist, I’ve learned the hard way that catching small issues before they turn into big ones is absolutely critical to ensure your best oral health. That's why I wouldn’t use anything less than 7.5x magnification loupes. You might have seen me wearing those funny-looking glasses with the magnified lenses, but there’s a lot more to them than just looking really, super cool. The glasses also give me super vision!
In fact, if your dentist isn’t using loupes (or, even better, 7.5x magnification loupes), you might be missing out on some really important benefits. Let me break down why I swear by these special glasses - and why you should care.
1 I can see what the invisible eye can’t
The thing is, dentists can’t always see tiny cracks, early cavities, or the first signs of gum disease. But with my 7.5x magnification loupes, I can spot these issues long before they become bigger problems - like deep cavities or tooth infections. That means I can treat problems earlier, saving you from expensive, painful procedures down the road.
2. It prevents costly mistakes
When I’m placing a crown or filling, precision is vital. The last thing I want for you is a poor-fitting restoration that could cause you unnecessary pain or complications. With the magnification loupes, I can see the finer details, ensuring the work is done right the first time. This level of accuracy means fewer adjustments, fewer visits, and a much smoother experience for you.
3. Your overall health is on the line
Here’s something you might not know: Your oral health is deeply connected to your overall health. If something goes undetected - like an infection or an improperly placed filling - it could lead to other health problems down the line. For example, untreated gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and even dementia. My loupes help me spot these subtle, often hidden issues, givingyou a healthier mouth and body. This means you’re not just getting great dental care - you’re taking care of your whole well-being, giving you better peace of mind.
4. Less time in the chair (for both of us)
I’ve got to be honest - leaning over patients all day long can be tough on my neck and back. But with the added magnification, I don’t need to bend over as much, which means I can work more efficiently and comfortably. And for you? That translates to quicker, more comfortable appointments with less time spent in the chair.
So, when you see me wearing my loupes, please know they’re not just a fashion statement; I’m choosing to wear the best tool available to take the best care of you.
