There’s something truly special about a child’s very first visit to the dentist. At Shumack Dental in Wagga, we have the joy of welcoming our littlest patients for this exciting milestone. As you can see, our littlest patient was all smiles, absolutely delighted with her experience and proud of herself for being so brave.
When calculus builds up, it’s harder to clean with just brushing and flossing. The rough texture attracts bacteria and can lead to more serious issues down the line, such as:
Gum irritation and inflammation
Bad breath
Tooth decay and cavities
Gum disease
Did you know that we don’t actually need wisdom teeth? In fact, they’re just leftover relics from our ancient ancestors. Long before dentists roamed the earth, these third molars served a purpose for Neanderthals and early humans, but in today’s world, they’re more likely to cause problems than provide any real benefit. Let me explain why.

Your mouth is constantly renewing itself. The lining of your mouth, called the mucosa, has its cells replaced at a pretty high rate. But if you’re not getting enough sleep, your body doesn’t have the energy or "building blocks" it needs to repair those cells properly. That means the mucosa doesn’t regenerate as it should - and ulcers can pop up.
At Shumack Dental, we take your oral health seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously 😂

Research continues to show a strong connection between oral health and overall health, particularly when it comes to gum disease. Inflammation in the gums doesn’t just stay in the mouth — it can enter the bloodstream and contribute to wider health issues, including an increased risk of heart disease.
With patience, creativity, and consistency, brushing can become a positive part of your child’s day. By starting early, choosing the right tools, modelling good habits, explaining the importance, making it fun, and keeping up with dental visits, you’re giving your child the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
As a dentist, I’m often asked about whitening toothpaste. And I get it - everyone wants a brighter smile. The idea of using toothpaste to whiten your teeth seems like a quick and easy solution. But here’s the thing: while it can help improve the appearance of your teeth, there are some risks you need to be aware of.

If you grew up in the 90’s (like I did), you probably recall the sugar-free gum ads that promised to help your mouth get back to a healthy state in just two minutes after eating. At the time, it might have seemed like a clever marketing gimmick - but as it turns out, those ads were right! Chewing sugar-free gum really can be great for your teeth, and here's why.

Most people think of their teeth and gums as something separate from the rest of their body — like a garage next to the house. In reality, your mouth is more like the front door to your entire system. What happens there doesn’t stay there. It can quietly influence your heart, blood vessels, and even your brain.
Do wisdom teeth cause the front teeth to become crooked? For decades, the idea that wisdom teeth exert pressure on the rest of the teeth, leading to crowding, has circulated in both dental circles and everyday conversations
Have you ever wondered why some whitening products seem to work wonders, while others do next to nothing? With so many gels, strips, pastes and lights on the market, it’s no surprise patients often ask us: “What actually works to whiten teeth — and is it safe?”
At Shumack Dental & Implants in Wagga Wagga, we believe in providing honest, evidence-based answers — not marketing fluff. So here’s a science-backed look at the most common whitening options, what’s inside them, and what you can realistically expect.

Tooth Mousse is a creamy dental product that’s applied to your teeth, often at home, to help strengthen and protect your enamel. Its magic ingredient is something called CPP-ACP—short for Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate. Put simply, this ingredient comes from milk proteins and carries a ready-to-go bundle of calcium and phosphate, the two essential minerals that make up strong enamel. When your teeth are exposed to acid from food, drinks, or bacteria, they can lose these minerals—a process called demineralisation. Over time, this weakens the enamel and increases your risk of sensitivity, cavities, and erosion.

Many parents are surprised to learn that night-time teeth grinding—known as sleep bruxism—isn’t just a bad habit. At Shumack Dental & Implants here in Wagga Wagga, we often explain to families that bruxism in children is now understood as a neurologically driven movement disorder, not simply a response to stress or misaligned teeth.
