Extractions and Wisdom Tooth removal
Extractions
At Shumack Dental, doing everything we can to save and restore a tooth is our priority. However, some conditions may affect the tooth to a degree that is beyond repair. These include severe decay, advanced periodontal (gum) disease, or an unfortunate fracture of the tooth beneath the level of the gum.
The option to have a tooth extracted is provided when it is the surest method to restore comfort, function and the appearance of the tooth. At Shumack Dental, we provide a range of treatment options for the comfortable removal of a tooth which matches your diagnosis.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last to come through. They are that ‘extra’ tooth at the back of the mouth that seems to arrive to the party as an afterthought. They can sit backwards, sidewards and even upside down.
If there’s not enough room or if the jaw isn’t big enough, a wisdom tooth can start applying (unpleasant) pressure upon the tooth next door. Similarly, if the wisdom tooth only erupts halfway through, food, debris and bacteria can get stuck beneath the gum. Both of these events can be quite painful and result in inflamed, swollen and sore gums. If left untreated, both the wisdom tooth and its neighbouring tooth can become severely damaged.
What to expect
At Shumack Dental, a radiograph will be taken to find out the specific position of the wisdom tooth, its proximity to the nerve beneath, and to make sure the tooth next door hasn’t become damaged.
Once a diagnosis has been made, a treatment plan will be arranged and we will discuss the options available to you. When you are comfortable with your decision, from there we will make arrangements for the procedure. Keeping you free from pain is our highest priority.
