What is Tooth Mousse, and Why Haven’t You Heard of It in Wagga Wagga?

At Shumack Dental & Implants here in Wagga Wagga, we’re always on the lookout for gentle, effective ways to protect our patients’ teeth—especially when it comes to prevention. One of the lesser-known tools in our dental kit is something called Tooth Mousse. If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone! But this clever little crème could be a game-changer for your enamel, especially if you’re prone to sensitivity, decay, or erosion.

What is Tooth Mousse?

Tooth Mousse is a creamy dental product that’s applied to your teeth, often at home, to help strengthen and protect your enamel. Its magic ingredient is something called CPP-ACP—short for Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate. Put simply, this ingredient comes from milk proteins and carries a ready-to-go bundle of calcium and phosphate, the two essential minerals that make up strong enamel. When your teeth are exposed to acid from food, drinks, or bacteria, they can lose these minerals—a process called demineralisation. Over time, this weakens the enamel and increases your risk of sensitivity, cavities, and erosion.

Tooth Mousse helps reverse that process by remineralising the enamel surface—feeding it with the minerals it needs to stay strong.

How Does It Work?

Imagine your enamel like a wall made of bricks. Every time you have something acidic—like soft drinks, fruit juice, or even frequent snacking—some of those bricks get chipped away. Eventually, holes appear in the wall.

Tooth Mousse works by delivering microscopic repair material—calcium and phosphate ions—straight to those holes. It doesn’t just sit on top of your teeth, it binds to plaque, enamel, and even the inside of early white spot lesions, helping to rebuild and repair your enamel from the inside out.

If you’ve used a fluoride toothpaste or rinse before, great! Tooth Mousse can be used with fluoride and even enhances its effects. Some versions, like GC Tooth Mousse Plus, combine fluoride with CPP-ACP for a double-strength effect.

Who Should Use It?

We often recommend Tooth Mousse to patients who have:
- White spot lesions from braces or early decay
- Acid erosion from diet or reflux
- Tooth sensitivity
- Molar-Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH) in children
- Dry mouth from medications or health conditions
- High cavity risk

It’s also a fantastic addition to your routine if you’ve recently had teeth whitening or if you're wearing orthodontic appliances.

Even better—it’s suitable for children and adults, provided there are no milk protein allergies.

Why Haven’t I Seen It in the Shops?

Tooth Mousse isn’t sold like regular toothpaste. It’s usually recommended and supplied by dental professionals, which means it tends to fly under the radar. Many patients only hear about it when they visit their dentist or hygienist and we flag that their enamel might benefit from a little extra care.

It’s also a more targeted treatment—designed to prevent and repair damage in people who really need it, rather than as a one-size-fits-all everyday product.

How Do You Use It?

- Brush your teeth as normal
- Apply a small pea-sized amount of Tooth Mousse with a clean finger or cotton tip
- Leave it undisturbed on your teeth for at least 3 minutes (don’t rinse)
- For best results, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application

For patients with active enamel wear, we may recommend using it once or twice daily, or even after meals.

Backed by Real Science

Tooth Mousse isn’t just marketing fluff—it’s backed by over two decades of research from dental schools around the world. Studies have shown that CPP-ACP:
- Repairs enamel subsurface lesions
- Prevents cavities during orthodontic treatment
- Reduces acid erosion
- Minimises sensitivity after whitening

At Shumack Dental & Implants, we use it as part of a preventive and personalised treatment plan, especially for patients with complex needs or early signs of enamel breakdown.

Should You Be Using It?

If you’ve ever had sensitivity, visible wear on your teeth, frequent cavities, or if you’re just looking for that extra layer of protection—Tooth Mousse is absolutely worth a conversation. It’s a simple, non-invasive way to rebuild and protect your smile, and many of our Wagga patients love the peace of mind it brings.

Feel free to ask us about it at your next visit—we’ll help you decide if it’s right for you.
